The Panasonic features a circular tip that has little, slit-like openings. within the tip could be a spinning blade. The hair gets caught between the slits and therefore the spinning blade. that's how it cuts. I wrote a review of that trimmer back in July of 2004 and gave it four stars. My second trimmer was another Panasonic, ER421KC. Norelco Shavers one had atiny low LED light-weight to assist you see whereas trimming underneath your nose. I bought it to switch the ER411NC once it fell off the counter and broken its blades. The ER421NC is incredibly uncomfortable. Althought it uses an equivalent blade style because the ER411NC, the motor appears to be weaker. it's simply stopped. The spinning blade generally cannot cut the hair that gets caught between the slits and itself. The hair will force the blades to prevent spinning. it'll be arduous to get rid of while not pulling the hair out. this can be terribly uncomfortable, to mention the smallest amount. it'll bring tears to your eyes.
